“Arachnomancy”is the second in a series of works called Natural Magic. The first in the series, “Conversations with a Wolf,” was performed by Jonathan Sielaff at Third Angle’s Porch Music in 2016. Natural Magic is a series of animist karaoke works for solo performer and pre-recorded soundtrack. The imagery of these works is based on various dreams of the composer, involving communications with insects and animals (spider, turtle, wolf, et al). Marble’s compositional process draws heavily from esoteric traditions and the natural sciences. While “Conversation with a Wolf” featured melodies derived from botanical forms, “Arachnomancy” features a compositional system based on the spider web. For Natural Magic Marble designs an open score, and each piece in the series unfolds as a collaboration between the performer and composer.
